Ford Focus 1st Gen

The first-generation Ford Focus arrived in North America for the 2000 model year, replacing the Escort with a revolutionary "New Edge" design and a sophisticated independent rear suspension. Offered as a sedan, wagon, 3-door hatch, and 5-door hatch, its excellent handling immediately set it apart from other economy cars. It was a global car for Ford that earned praise for bringing European driving dynamics to the American market.

Collector interest is almost entirely focused on the performance-oriented SVT Focus, which appeared in 2002. Ford's Special Vehicle Team fitted a 170 hp version of the 2.0L Zetec engine, a 6-speed Getrag manual transmission, larger brakes, and unique styling. These cars, especially clean, low-mileage examples, are the only ones with significant collector value. They represent an era when simple, lightweight, and fun-to-drive hot hatches were a priority for Ford.

The market for the first-gen Focus is split. The vast majority trade as simple used cars, reflected in an average sale price under $10,000. However, the top of the market shows that pristine SVT Focus examples are now legitimate collectibles, with the best cars selling for up to $40,000. Finding an unmodified, well-maintained SVT is becoming increasingly difficult, which is driving values up for top-tier examples.

Prices range from around $400 for project cars to $40,000 for pristine, low-mileage SVT models.
