Honda CX

Honda introduced the CX500 in 1978 as a major departure from its successful inline-four formula. The bike featured Honda's first V-twin engine, which was liquid-cooled and mounted transversely in the frame, similar to a Moto Guzzi. The design was innovative, with heads twisted 22 degrees to improve ergonomics and a maintenance-friendly shaft drive. The series expanded to include Custom, Deluxe, and later, turbocharged variants like the CX500TC and the bored-out CX650.

The CX series has found a dedicated following decades after its production ended. While not a massive sales hit when new, its durable engineering and unique character make it an attractive classic. The bike's strong frame and reliable powertrain have also made it a favorite canvas for custom builders, leading to a surge in cafe racer and scrambler conversions. The rarest and most collectible models are the factory turbocharged CX500TC and CX650T, which represent a unique era of forced-induction experimentation in the motorcycle industry.

The market for the CX series is broad. Inexpensive project bikes are common, but the top of the market is reserved for exceptionally clean, original examples and the rare turbo models. The average sale price of around $7,500 is heavily influenced by the valuable turbo bikes, as standard CX500s and 650s typically trade for much less. The popularity of custom builds means many examples have been modified, with quality varying significantly from bike to bike.

Prices for Honda CX series motorcycles range from $750 for project bikes to over $19,000 for pristine, low-mileage turbocharged examples.
