Jaguar S-Type 2nd Gen

Jaguar's S-Type, produced from 1999 to 2007, was a retro-styled executive sedan built on Ford's DEW98 platform, which it shared with the Lincoln LS. It aimed to recapture the spirit of the original 1960s S-Type while competing with German rivals like the BMW 5 Series. The car received a significant update for the 2003 model year that introduced a much-improved interior, a new 6-speed ZF automatic transmission, and the flagship S-Type R.

The S-Type R is the model that attracts collectors. With a 400 hp supercharged 4.2L V8, it offered serious performance to challenge the BMW M5 and Mercedes-Benz E55 AMG. Its unique blend of traditional wood-and-leather luxury with brute force gives it a distinct character. While its polarizing looks have kept values below its German counterparts, it's this underdog status that makes it appealing to many enthusiasts.

The market for the S-Type is currently at the bottom of its depreciation curve. The vast majority of transactions are for standard V6 and naturally aspirated V8 models, which are treated as inexpensive used luxury cars. However, excellent, low-mileage S-Type R examples have begun to appreciate, with the best cars selling for over $20,000. These R models represent a strong value in the modern performance sedan market.

Prices range from a few hundred dollars for cars needing work to $26,000 for top-spec S-Type R examples.
