Jeep SJ Gladiator

The Jeep Gladiator (SJ) debuted in 1962, sharing its advanced chassis and front-end styling with the new Wagoneer. It was a tough, modern truck available with an independent front suspension on 2-wheel drive models and a variety of bed and wheelbase combinations. The "Gladiator" name was dropped after 1971, but the truck continued as the J-Series (J10/J20) all the way to 1988, powered by a range of AMC inline-6 and V8 engines, including the potent 360 and 401.

Collectors appreciate the J-Series for its direct lineage to the classic Wagoneer and its rugged, unmistakable style. Unlike the later unibody Comanche, these were body-on-frame trucks built for heavy work. Special editions like the Honcho, Golden Eagle, and Laredo are particularly sought after for their unique graphics and equipment, adding a dose of 70s and 80s flair.

The market for these trucks is broad, with an average sale price around $18,000. Rough projects can be found for very little, while driver-quality examples represent the bulk of sales. The top of the market, approaching $80,000, is reserved for perfectly restored or immaculate original survivors, especially those equipped with desirable V8 engines and rare trim packages.
