The second-generation Lexus GS (S160) debuted for the 1998 model year, bringing a distinctive quad-headlight design penned by Italdesign Giugiaro. It directly challenged European rivals like the BMW 5 Series with a combination of luxury, performance, and legendary Toyota reliability. It was offered primarily as the GS 300 with the 3.0L 2JZ-GE inline-6, or the V8-powered GS 400 (and later, the GS 430) with the 1UZ-FE (and later, 3UZ-FE) engine.

Collectors appreciate the S160 for its durable engineering and clean, timeless styling. The GS 300 is particularly popular in the tuner community due to its 2JZ engine, which shares its basic architecture with the twin-turbo engine from the Supra Mk4. The V8 models, especially the early GS 400 with its 300 horsepower, are sought after for their smooth power delivery and status as comfortable, high-speed cruisers. Finding an unmodified, low-mileage example is becoming increasingly difficult.

The market for the second-gen GS is accessible but shows a wide spread based on condition and mileage. With an average sale price around $13,600, most cars trade for under $15,000. However, exceptional, well-documented examples have sold for over $25,000, showing that enthusiasts will pay a premium for the best cars. The high supply of modified or neglected cars keeps the entry point very low.
