Lotus Elite

The original Lotus Elite, or Type 14, was a landmark car for Lotus when it debuted in 1957. It was the world's first production car to use a fiberglass monocoque chassis, a technology derived from the aerospace and boat-building industries. This construction made it incredibly light, around 1,100 pounds, and stiff. Power came from a jewel-like 1.2-liter Coventry Climax FWE inline-4, an all-aluminum single-overhead-cam engine that produced about 75 hp.

Collectors prize the Type 14 for its technical innovation, stunning aerodynamic body, and exceptional handling. It's a true driver's car that embodies Colin Chapman's philosophy of 'simplify, then add lightness.' Its racing pedigree, including 6 class wins at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, cements its historical importance. Original, well-preserved examples are rare, as many were raced, modified, or succumbed to the challenges of their pioneering construction.

The market for the 'Elite' nameplate is complicated by the later Type 75, a 4-seat wedge-shaped car from the 1970s that shares only a name. The wide valuation spread reflects this, with tired Type 75s at the bottom and restored or race-proven Type 14s at the top. The average price of around $52,000 indicates that solid examples of the original Type 14 are valuable but can be more accessible than some Italian contemporaries.
