Maserati Merak

The Maserati Merak was launched in 1972 as a V6-powered, 2+2 alternative to the V8 Bora. Designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro at Italdesign, it shares its stunning wedge profile with the Bora but uses unique flying buttresses instead of a full glass fastback. Early cars were heavily influenced by then-owner Citroën, using a 3.0L V6 derived from the Citroën SM and its complex high-pressure hydraulic system.

Collectors appreciate the Merak for offering the exotic, mid-engine looks of its bigger brother at a much lower price point. The later Merak SS (Super Sport), introduced in 1975, is the most sought-after version. It featured a 50 kg weight reduction and a power boost to 220 hp. Post-1976 cars, built under De Tomaso ownership, ditched the Citroën hydraulics for more conventional systems, simplifying maintenance.

With an average sale price just under $40,000, the Merak market represents a significant value in the world of vintage Italian sports cars.
