Nissan Titan 1st Gen

Nissan's first full-size truck, the Titan challenged the American market with a standard 5.6L V8 and clever utility features. Today it's an affordable and capable used truck, with clean PRO-4X models holding the most appeal for enthusiasts.

Introduced for the 2004 model year, the first-generation Titan was Nissan's bold entry into the American full-size truck market. Built in Mississippi, every Titan came standard with a potent 5.6L Endurance V8 engine, initially producing 305 horsepower, and a 5-speed automatic transmission. Available in King Cab and Crew Cab configurations, it offered innovative features for its time, including the Utili-track bed channel system, a factory spray-in bedliner, and a lockable bedside storage compartment.

The Titan's appeal comes from its V8 power and its status as a capable alternative to domestic trucks. While most examples are treated as work vehicles, enthusiasts gravitate towards the off-road-oriented PRO-4X trim, introduced in 2008. These trucks, especially well-preserved, low-mileage examples, are the most desirable.

Today's market for the first-gen Titan is almost entirely on the used utility side, not the collector side. With an average sale price under $10,000, they represent a great value for a V8 truck. The vast majority of transactions are for high-mileage work trucks, while pristine PRO-4X models command the highest prices, occasionally approaching $20,000.

Buying Tips

  • Check the rear axle for leaking differential seals, a common failure. Look for signs of gear oil slung onto the inner side of the rear wheels.
  • Listen for a ticking noise from the engine bay, especially on a cold start. The factory exhaust manifolds are known to crack, resulting in a costly repair.
  • Inspect the frame and bed supports for significant rust, particularly if the truck has lived in a northern climate.
  • Early models (pre-2008) can suffer from a failed radiator cooler that mixes coolant and transmission fluid. Check the transmission fluid for a milky, pink appearance.

Prices for first-generation Nissan Titans typically range from around $500 for project trucks to $19,000 for low-mileage, top-trim examples.
