Porsche 987 Cayman

The 987 Cayman was Porsche's first-generation coupe based on the Boxster platform, introduced for the 2006 model year. It slotted in between the Boxster and the 911, offering a fixed-roof, mid-engine layout that many enthusiasts craved for its rigidity and balance. The first cars were Cayman S models with a 295 hp 3.4L flat-6, followed by the 245 hp 2.7L base model in 2007. A major update for 2009 (the 987.2) brought new DFI engines (a 2.9L and a new 3.4L) and the option of a 7-speed PDK dual-clutch transmission, replacing the Tiptronic S automatic.

Collectors appreciate the 987 for its superb handling dynamics, excellent feedback from the hydraulic power steering, and its relatively analog feel compared to newer Porsches. The 987.2 models are especially sought-after as their new engine design eliminated the intermediate shaft (IMS) bearing, a known weak point in the earlier M97 engines. Prices have largely bottomed out and are now stable, with clean, low-mileage 987.2 examples showing signs of appreciation. While high-mileage early cars can be found for less, the top of the market is defined by low-mileage S models and the limited-production Cayman R, which command significant premiums.
