Subaru Vivio

The Subaru Vivio was a kei car produced from 1992 to 1998, replacing the long-running Rex. Its name is a reference to its 660cc engine displacement, written as VI VI O in Roman numerals. The car featured a 4-cylinder EN07 engine, independent suspension, and was available with front-wheel or all-wheel drive, distinguishing it from many of its 3-cylinder rivals.

Collectors are primarily interested in the supercharged variants, the RX-R and the homologation special RX-RA. These models offer impressive performance for their size, and the car's surprising success in rally racing, including an entry in the 1993 Safari Rally driven by Colin McRae, adds to its pedigree. It's an accessible and fun entry point into 90s JDM performance cars.

The market for the Vivio is small but dedicated. With an average sale price of just $5,655, it remains an affordable option. As a 25-year-rule import, more examples are becoming available in North America, but low production numbers for performance trims mean finding a clean, supercharged model can be a challenge.
