Famed for its versatility and status as a 1960s counter-culture icon, the VW Type 2 is a beloved collector's vehicle. It's prized for its nostalgic charm and simple mechanics, making early 'split-window' models especially sought-after in the market.
Volkswagen Type 2 sold for a median of $21,964 over the last 12 months, based on 269 auction sales; the middle 50% sold between $13,728 and $37,798. 2,992 currently for sale.
The Volkswagen Type 2 is one of the most recognizable vehicles ever made. Launched in 1949, its simple air-cooled, rear-engine design offered incredible versatility, serving as everything from a commercial workhorse to a family camper. The first-generation (T1) 'split-window' models, produced until 1967, are especially iconic and became symbols of 1960s counter-culture.
Collectors prize the Type 2 for its nostalgic charm, simple mechanics, and practicality. The most desirable versions are the T1 Deluxe Microbuses, known as 'Samba' models, which feature 21 or 23 windows and a cloth sunroof. These rare variants command the highest prices. The second-generation (T2) 'bay-window' is also popular and offers improved drivability for those looking to use their Bus regularly.
The market for the Type 2 is very active, with an average price of around $32,574 across 775 recent sales. Well-restored Sambas can easily fetch over $100,000, while driver-quality bay-window models and later T3 Vanagons offer more affordable entry points. Condition and originality are the primary drivers of value.
Buying Tips
Rust is the number one enemy. Thoroughly inspect the floor pans, rocker panels, outriggers, jacking points, and the battery tray.
Check for oil leaks from the engine, particularly around the pushrod tubes and crankshaft seals. A smoky or noisy engine signals expensive repairs.
On T1 models, inspect the reduction boxes at the rear wheels for leaks or excessive noise, as they are a unique and critical component.
Verify M-codes on the VIN plate to confirm the vehicle's original color, options, and model type. Many standard buses have been converted to look like more valuable Deluxe models.
Test the heater. The system relies on heat exchangers around the exhaust, which can rust out and leak dangerous carbon monoxide into the cabin.
Prices range from $1,250 for project vehicles to $212,000 for pristine, highly sought-after examples.
