The first-generation Volkswagen Type 2, known as the 'Splittie' for its two-piece windshield, was built from 1950 to 1967. It shared its rear-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout and air-cooled flat-4 engine with the Type 1 Beetle, making it mechanically simple and reliable. Initially designed as a commercial workhorse, it became an icon of the 1960s counter-culture movement, which cemented its place in automotive history.

Collectors prize the Type 2 for its timeless design and cultural significance. The most desirable models are the Deluxe Microbuses, nicknamed 'Samba' buses, which feature numerous extra windows (up to 23), a fabric sunroof, and two-tone paint. Early 'Barndoor' models, built before March 1955, are also highly sought after for their rarity and unique large engine lid. Authenticity is key, as many standard buses have been converted to look like more valuable Samba models.

The market for Split-Window buses is mature and stratified. While the average sale price sits around $55,000, this figure masks a huge spread. Project vehicles can be found for a few thousand dollars, but concours-level restorations of rare 23-window Sambas can easily exceed $200,000. Overall values have remained strong, driven by a global community of dedicated enthusiasts.

Prices range from $1,500 for non-running projects to over $212,000 for perfectly restored, high-specification models.
