The 3 1/2 Litre, introduced in 1933, was the first Bentley produced after Rolls-Royce's acquisition. These "Derby Bentleys," built in the Rolls-Royce factory in Derby, were based on a Rolls-Royce chassis but featured a tuned engine and were marketed as "the silent sports car." In 1936, the engine was enlarged to 4 1/4 Litres to handle the increasing weight of luxurious custom bodies. Production ceased in 1939, with around 2,422 chassis built across both engine sizes.

- Bodywork is paramount. An original, desirable body from a famed coachbuilder like Vanden Plas or H.J. Mulliner can be worth several times more than a standard steel saloon. Verify the coachbuilder's plate and check for signs of body modifications or replacements.
- The wooden frame beneath the aluminum or steel skin is prone to rot. Carefully inspect the sills, door posts, and trunk floor, as frame repairs are extremely expensive and labor-intensive.
- Engine health is critical. A full rebuild can cost tens of thousands of dollars. Check for low oil pressure when warm, coolant in the oil, and evidence of a cracked block or cylinder head.
- Insist on documentation. A complete history file, including build sheets and maintenance records, is vital. Confirming the car has its original matching-numbers engine and chassis greatly increases its value.
