The second-generation modern MINI, known by its R56 chassis code, debuted for the 2007 model year. It was a complete redesign, larger than its predecessor but visually similar. The biggest change was under the hood, with the previous Chrysler-based Tritec engine replaced by the Peugeot-Citroën co-developed Prince engine. This brought direct injection and turbocharging to the Cooper S for the first time, significantly boosting performance over the previous supercharged R53.

Collectors are drawn to the high-performance John Cooper Works (JCW) models and the various special editions. The R56 platform offered a wide range of variants, including the Clubman, Coupe, and Roadster, but the classic Hardtop remains the core model. While early turbocharged N14 engines (2007-2010) have a reputation for reliability issues, the later N18 engine (2011-2015) is generally considered more sorted, making those later cars more desirable for many buyers.

The market for the R56 is mature, with 197 sales showing an average price under $10,000. This makes it an affordable entry into the world of modern hot hatches. The vast price spread, from a few hundred dollars to nearly $40,000, reflects the difference between high-mileage base models and pristine, low-mileage JCW examples. Top-tier cars have found a floor and are holding their value well.
