The 991 generation, launched for the 2012 model year, marked a major step for the 911 with a longer wheelbase, wider front track, and electric power steering. It was split into two distinct series: the 991.1 (2012-2016) and the facelifted 991.2 (2017-2019). The 991.1 is particularly notable because its Carrera, Carrera S, and GTS models were the last 911s outside of the GT series to feature naturally aspirated engines, a major draw for purists.

The introduction of the 991.2 brought smaller, 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged flat-six engines to the entire Carrera lineup.
