Porsche 924 Turbo

Porsche created the 924 Turbo, known internally as the 931, to silence critics who felt the standard 924 was underpowered. While the engine block was still sourced from Audi, Porsche's engineers heavily revised the 2.0L inline-4, adding a new cylinder head and a KKK K26 turbocharger. The result was 170 hp for North American models, a significant jump that cut the 0-60 mph time to around 7.5 seconds.

The 924 Turbo has gained favor with collectors looking for an affordable, front-engine Porsche with genuine 1980s turbo character. It's rarer than its naturally aspirated sibling and provides a much more engaging driving experience. Its connection to the later, more powerful Carrera GT homologation special also adds to its historical significance and appeal.

With an average sale price of just over $12,000, the 924 Turbo occupies an accessible corner of the classic Porsche market. It hasn't seen the dramatic price spikes of its 911 contemporaries, making it a great value for an interesting transaxle model. Excellent, low-mileage examples can bring up to $30,000, but driver-quality cars are commonly found for much less.
